What is the SFI Group System?
The SFI Group System is a standardised classification for ships and offshore vessels. It organises every part of a vessel — hull, machinery, equipment and systems — into a numeric hierarchy, so shipyards, owners and suppliers can refer to the same component with the same code across specifications, budgets and maintenance systems.
An SFI code is read from the broadest level down to the specific item:
- Main group — 1 digit, e.g.
6(Machinery Main Components) - Group — 2 digits, e.g.
60(Propulsion Diesel Engines) - Sub-group — 3 digits, e.g.
601(Diesel Engines) - Detail —
xxx.xxx, e.g.601.001
Detail codes can be extended with further yard- or project-specific
specification levels, such as 601.001.03.
Frequently asked questions
- What does an SFI code look like?

xxx.xxx, such as601.001. The first three digits identify the sub-group and the last three the specific detail. The same code can also be written without the dot, e.g.601001. - How many SFI main groups are there?
- Eight main groups (1–8), each divided into groups, sub-groups and detail codes, covering everything from the ship in general to hull, equipment, machinery and their systems.
- Can I look up any SFI code here?
- Yes — paste any code above (for example
601001,601.001, or one with extra specification levels like634_003_01_07) and it is broken down into each level with its official name and description.
